چکیده

Aorto-coronary artery bypass surgery is being employed with excellent results on an increasing number of patien~s with occlusive arteriosclerotic disease. Although it was previously thought that diabetic mellitus patients, whose arteriosclerosis is more diffuse and includes small vessel disease, could not benefit from this procedure; an increasing number are being operated on with comparable results.', 2 Since the perfusionist is the sole regulator of body metabolism during cardiopulmonary bypass, a review of the literature and a case report are presented.

Comparison of blood electrolytes and glucose during cardiopulmonary bypass in diabetic and non-diabetic patients

BACKGROUND Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) during coronary artery bypass grafting is thought to contribute significantly to increased blood glucose level and altered blood electrolytes balance during the operation. In this (CABG) study, blood electrolytes and glucose during CPB in insulin-dependent diabetic and non-diabetic patients were assessed with special emphasis on the trend of the changes. ...

Jugular venous bulb oxygen saturation in patients with preexisting diabetes mellitus or stroke during normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass.

BACKGROUND The authors hypothesized that patients with cerebrovascular abnormalities or metabolic disorders may experience abnormality in cerebral circulation more frequently than patients without these risks. The current study attempted to assess jugular venous bulb oxygen saturation (SjvO2) in patients with preexisting diabetes mellitus or stroke undergoing normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass...

Problems of Cold Agglutinins in Cardiac Surgery: How to Manage Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Myocardial Protection

Cold agglutinins are of unique relevance in cardiac surgerybecause of the use of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cold autoimmune diseases are defined by the presence of abnormal circulating proteins (usually IgM or IgA antibodies) that agglutinate in response to a decrease in body temperature. These disorders include cryoglobulinemia and cold hemagglutinin disease.Immunoglobulin M aut...

Hyperglycemia during cardiopulmonary bypass is an independent risk factor for mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND Hyperglycemia is commonly present in the perioperative period in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, even during administration of insulin. A direct relationship between postoperative hyperglycemia and mortality has been established in diabetic patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, this relationship might be confounded because patients with poor outcome receive more glucogen...

Comparison of the Effect of Voluven and Ringer Solution in Cardiopulmonary Bypass on the Bleeding After the Surgery and Renal Function in Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgeries

Background: This study compared the effect of Voluven and Ringer solution in cardiopulmonary bypass on the bleeding after the surgery and renal function in coronary artery bypass graft surgeries. Methods: Two types of prime solution including ringer - as Crystalloid- and Voluven were used in two groups and compared in terms of bleeding and renal function during the first 24 hours after the surg...
